Abstract
Pakistan lies among the ten largest countries in the globe in terms of sugar production. But in the recent past, the number of occupational diseases and accidents has risen due to negligence about health and safety and poor workplace environment. Several potential health risks are found prevalent at workplaces in Pakistan where workers in the sugarcane industry are still exposed to hazardous chemicals. Due to high levels of illiteracy in many of the workers, they do not have the faintest idea about protective measures. This research examines aspects of sustainable Occupational Health and Safety OHS control measures for the mitigation of negative effects on the health of employees engaged in the sugarcane business and the environment. From the literature review, case studies and field surveys done in the study, OHS risks in the industry are established as being; exposure to chemicals, ergonomic hazards and physical hazards. The following are some of these solutions that have been highlighted in the study:– Advanced PPEs Advanced ergonomic hand tools, and Agricultural sustainable practices. According to current global statistics, 10% of sugar industry employees are likely to be involved in workplace accidents that result in loss of working time, severe injury, or death; that is why the industry’s performance is deteriorating. In previous research, concerns of safety at the workplace have been looked at from the perspective of the employees ‘concerns for their safety but not concerning safety concerns and performance. To increase overall performance, there is a need to improve the aspect of health and safety of the workers, conduct facility, material and compliance checks frequently, and train every new employee on OHS procedures when hiring
